Glamping in Golden

We recently set out on our very first adventure as a family of three and I have a few thoughts I’d like to share about the whole experience! I’d love to be able to say that it was as perfect as the pictures make it look – a collection of peaceful moments spent cuddling my baby boy in the forest – but it wasn’t quite so picturesque as that! Don’t get me wrong; we had an absolutely wonderful time. It was just quite different from what we expected, which seems to be the theme of our lives now that our son is here.

Before we get into my deep thoughts about motherhood, let’s talk trip details (because the details were ohhhh so beautiful!) We booked our “glamping” trip with Love and Lantern in Golden, BC and I cannot rave about it enough. Alysia thought of EVERYTHING, from the gorgeous, rustic-chic décor in the luxe canvas tent, to the camp kit containing every cooking tool we’d need to prepare some pretty gourmet grub! Everything was set up when we got there so there was very little to do on our end, which is perfect when you have a new baby tagging along.

Even though we would have been completely happy to just hunker down in our cozy little abode the whole time, we managed to sneak in a few excursions as well. Our favourite was a trip up the gondola at Kicking Horse Mountain where we got to see stunning views of the surrounding mountains and enjoy a delicious lunch on top of the world while the first autumn storm blew snow around outside. We also stopped in at Whitetooth Brewing for a complementary growler fill!

It all looks amazing, right!? And it was amazing in lots of ways. But I also found our first trip with a baby to be kind of bittersweet. Sweet because I got to share my love of adventure and the great outdoors my son and see the wonder on his tiny face as he took in all of the new sights and smells. Bitter because a part of me also mourned the freedom and spontaneity that Dave and I have lost since having a child. Gone are the days of sleeping in until whenever, stopping wherever we like along the way, and carelessly trekking off on whatever wild adventure we fancy at the time. We’ve swapped all that for scheduled naptimes, early bedtimes, and fussing over whether our baby boy might be too cold or too tired or “too little for something like that.”

At first I thought I’d said a big, sad “Goodbye” to those days. But the more I think about it, the more it seems like a smaller, less sad “See you soon” instead. Before we know it, our family will have grown up a bit and will be up for greater adventures. Sure, they’ll never be the same as they were when it was just the two of us… they’ll be better in some ways and worse in others… but the point is that they will be. One day we’ll travel and explore like we used to do, just with a little extra baggage 😉

  1. The camping spot and accoutrements are lovely, but I cannot take my eyes off you and your gorgeous family. That’s what makes this post profound. Adorable. Thank you!
